Chocolate Toxicity in dogs
Theobromine is the active ingredient in chocolate that causes problems in dogs & it is a distant cousin of caffeine. The darker the chocolate, the higher the theobromine content, the higher the toxicity.
Ingestion of a small amount of theobromine can cause an upset stomach. Signs include:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal Pain
• Lack of appetite
• Panting
Ingestion of moderate levels of theobromine can cause all the above signs, but also:
• Nervousness/restlessness
• Twitching
Ingestion of high levels of theobromine can cause all of the above signs, but also:
• Seizures (in severe cases)
• Death
High levels of theobromine can cause a dangerously rapid heart rate & high blood pressure, both of which may require treatment.
Sometimes, getting your dog to vomit the chocolate is enough but it is best to have them evaluated by your veterinarian or emergency clinic as soon as possible after ingestion. They can help decide when, how & where to induce vomiting & if further therapy is needed.
